Mercedes EQG , this is the name of the electric concept. Which has little prototype, as the House of the three-pointed star announces. “ Very close to the production in production of a fully electric variant ”.
The world premiere of the current Mercedes-Benz G – Class, during the 2018 Detroit Motor Show, then Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche had already promised that electrification would come to the SUV. And the executive was right, because the German manufacturer presents the Concept EQG, a prototype that is “an almost production study” of the SUV, being shown at the Munich Motor Show.
As the most recent rumors have suggested, the EQG does not use the modern EVA platform of the EQS , but rather with an adaptation of the G-Class base with a combustion engine. In other words, it’s a real SUV, with body-on-chassis construction, but fully electric. The batteries will be integrated into the chassis to ensure a low center of gravity, but Mercedes has not explained exactly how this will be done.
Exterior Details
The chassis also uses a rigid axle at the rear. As in the combustion version, it uses a manual override gearbox. All this so that it is a true off-road car as expected from a G-Class. On the other hand, it adopts a propulsion system with an engine integrated into each of the four wheels.
As with versions with combustion engines, the EQG will be able to climb climbs of up to 45°, as long as the terrain is not too rough. In smaller angles, it promises to be very brave and face any situation.
Visually, the SUV is as square as the G-Class, maintaining the iconic off-road car design. It even kept the round headlights, using an LED edge, while the arrow lights were positioned on the body near the hood, bouncing off the vehicle. The imitation grid is illuminated, with small blue squares and a white LED border. At the rear, the trunk lid appears another door and, instead of carrying the spare spare tire, it has a lighted box that looks like a wallbox and that serves to store some objects such as the recharge cable.
As it’s practically done, it shouldn’t change much when it’s a production version. The lighting on the rack must be removed and the grid must lose the LED edge. It’s using a set of polished 22″ aluminum wheels, which should also adopt a less unusual design when the utility is manufactured.
Mercedes-Benz is being a bit contradictory about when we will see the EQG on the streets. Right now, the company just says it will take the tram to the test track, where it will cover 5.6 kilometer off-road on one of the most challenging trails in the world. However, at a conference to talk about the architecture for electric cars, the manufacturer said it expected to launch the SUV in 2024.
