It became known about a major victory for Toyota Motor at the end of 2021 – the Japanese concern took first place in car sales in the US market. For the past 90 years (since 1931), General Motors has invariably held the upper hand in annual sales in the States, but according to the results of last year, it became the second in its own homeland.

According to Reuters , Toyota sold 2.332 million vehicles in the US last year, GM – 2.218 million vehicles, that is, 114 thousand units less. Thus, this car showed an increase of + 10% relative to 2020, while GM, on the contrary, showed a decline of -13%. Commenting on the event, Toyota’s management noted that the company’s priority is to grow profits, not to lead in the sales rankings.
In 2021, General Motors plants in North America were often idle due to a shortage of electronic components caused by a global semiconductor shortage. Toyota suffered from them much less often, because even before the crisis it had formed a large stock of chips.
Fewer than 15 million vehicles were sold in the United States in 2021, according to the consulting firm Wards Intelligence. For comparison, in the previous five years, the average annual level of sales was equal to 17.3 million vehicles.
